Windows XP & 2K install halts.

Roger

What's happening:

True for both XP and 2K

1) During initial phases of install everything is fine
(boot, system scan, file copy).
2) Install says "starting windows"
3) Mouse flashes. Also some keyboard activity (drivers
loading?)
4) Screen turns black
5) system freezes

Additional information:

- Hard drives have no physical damage. (I was told it
could be a source of problem)
- All hardware except videocard worked with win 2K
- All hardware except hard drive worked with win XP
- Windows 98 works.

(I will try to install with another videocard and see what
happens. I will also try to upgrade win 98)

Pleas help. I am geting desperate here.

Have you tried flashing the latest BIOS to your motherboard? Check
carefully before you perform this operation and only apply the BIOS firmware
for your exact make, model and revision of board. You'll find this on your
motherboard manufacturer's web site.

I'm not saying that's necessarily the problem, but it's worth checking.

No I havn't and I will do that.

However I find it unlikely cause of the problem because
I never updated BIOS and I successfully ran and installed
both win2K and XP before. (installed 2K and updated to XP
from 2K)

I did try to upgrade to XP from 98 but It caused errors.
