HOW TO: Enable or Disable Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP

Special note if you use AOL:

America Online installs its own connection settings that override
the ones that come with Windows XP. America Online's
connection settings don't include a way to turn on Windows XP's
built-in firewall.

Visit the following web site for instructions on downloading
a FREE firewall program for your computer.

However, if you're dealing with a proprietary connectoid, such as
those provided by AOL, you very probably
cannot change any settings, to include enabling the ICF.

If you're using AOL, MSN, NetZero, or another service that doesn't
trust its customers to control their own computers, you'll either need
to find a 3rd party firewall that is compatible with them, or switch
to a real ISP that is compatible with the real Internet.

So I'm asking which real ISP do you use ? I'm fed up with
msn.

Greetings --

I use Cableone.net, as it's the local broadband provider, where I
live. (I've more than enough bad experiences with Qwest's ability to
manage a telephone network, so I'm not eager to try their DSL
network.)

I'd recommend that you look in your local telephone book's yellow
pages, under Internet Services, to find a local ISP who meets your
needs and price range. Avoid the national services, such as
Earthlink, if possible, as the bigger the company, the worst the
quality of customer service.
