Windows would not start because ... miniNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYST

I was running XP Media Edition on my laptop and attempted to us Partician
Magic to setup a dual boot environment so I can run Linux for a class I am
taking. I have Linux installed but get the "windows could not start .....
miniNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYST "
error when I try and boot Windows.

I have tried booting the XP Media CD to repair the file as is recommended by
th on screen error message, but when I click R to repair I am told there are
no HDD's detected on my system.

I have class tonight and will need Windows back up so I can work with Flash.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

While I am not familiar with the PQ boot manager I suspect that
one of two things have happened:
- The boot manager fails to make your partition visible when you
select a Windows boot; or
- The boot manager thrashed your Windows partition.

Since neither is a Windows issue, your best bet is to check the
PQ FAQs or post your question in a PQ newsgroup.

You could also run PQMagic (if you have a PQ recovery CD)
and use it to make the Windows partition visible and active. If
Windows is intact then you could boot the machine with a boot
diskette. Here is how to make one:

- Format a floppy disk on some other WinXP PC.
- Copy these files from the \i386 folder of your WinXP CD to A:\
ntldr
ntdetect.com
- Create a file a:\boot.ini with these lines
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Note that the last line is a long line! Now try to boot the machine
with this floppy disk.

I don't have a floppy, but assume I could do the same with a CD if I setup mt
laptop to boot from the CD/DVD drive?

Thanks.

Yes, but you would have to burn a Windows boot
CD similar to the boot floppy described below.
You might find some boot images on www.bootdisk.com.
