Windows won't shut down

Using XP - never had problem with shutting down in last 6
months. But recently optimised disk/defragged etc (which
took ages) and also installed a cyberscrub program, since
windows won't shut down and just hangs. Went into the
Msconfig screen & altered couple of options, no good so
reset them.
Thought would do a system restore but horrified to find
that I had no checkpoints except for today! Couldn't even
go back to September as nothing there whereas before when
something went "wrong" always managed to restore to
previous date.
Don't know if I have accidentally scrubbed some important
stuff off pc with cyberscrub program but everything seems
much slower since optimised disk & thought would be
faster.
What to do pls experts ?? Thanks...
