Please help me, I have been having this problem for the past 2 and a half
weeks. When I click on a shut down method (it doesn't matter which one),
windows doesn't repond and won't shutdown. It remains at the desktop and
doesn't appear to be doing anything. I have searched for help, and have tried
this frequently found website : http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm
but nothing seems to work. Please help me...

Hi,

Before trying to shut down, hit ctrl+shift+escape to open task manager. Make
sure no applications are running, then go to the processes tab and start
selecting unnecessary ones (windows will not allow you to kill system tasks)
and use "end process" to stop them. Try shutting down after killing off a
few. If it works, then problem is one of the ones you killed. If not, then
keep at it until you figure out which is causing the problem.

By the way, you have scanned for viruses using an updated antivirus program
in safe mode first, right?

Also, Microsoft offers a add-in Service called "User Profile Hive Cleanup".
It helps to close and properly shut down the PC. It might be worth a
download/install and see if it helps.

well.... if youve gotten your serious help..... I think you need a laugh....
Unplug it! lol sry.. couldnt resist. I dont know what to say. Sounds like a
process, virus, or some unwanted progrma running in the background. Good luck!

The problem has been solved! It's all Norton Anti-Virus, go figure, right?
Once I disable it, I am able to shutdown my computer. Norton has also been
causing problems with my iTunes and Acrobat Reader. I'm glad this is all
solved, but what's causing it to act this way?

It's a Symantec product. No need to say more.

Sorry to interupt your thread Julia, but, I have a Question concerning:
User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.
How does this work ? I don't understand, I downloaded the Installer; now, I
can't find the Program to Open & Run ? How does this Clean your Profile ?
Does it run in the Background or do you open & run it .

My Computer won't shut down. It started a few days ago. On the "Computer Is
Shutting Down" Screen, it just hangs and remains there
until I Force Quit.
I have : McAfee Firewall and Viruscan, Spysweeper, Trend Micro Anti-Spyware.
I've never had a problem with them( in reference, to Starting Up or Shutting
Down). I just downloaded "Windows Defender"(Beta)-
I not to sure about that.
I have 49 Processes running in the : Windows Task Manager and to be honest I
don't know WHAT Processes to end ? Thanks.

It runs as a service. From the readme.txt file:

"WHAT IS UPHCLEAN
================

UPHClean is a service that once and for all gets rid of problems with
user profile not unloading.

You are having profile unload problems if you experience slow logoff
(with Saving Settings for most of the time while logging off), roaming
profiles that do not reconcile, or the registry size limit is reached.

WHY DO PROFILES NOT UNLOAD?
===========================

Many system and service processes do work on behalf of users. When the
work is done the system or service process is responsible for releasing
handles it has to the user profile hive. If this is not done by the
service as the user logs off the profile cannot be unloaded.

This problem in code can be caused by improper coding either in
Microsoft software or 3rd party software (e.g. printer drivers, virus
scanner service, etc). With the information provided by the system
there is no way to find out what software needs to be corrected to allow
profiles to unload."
