After spend $400 on hardware upgrades, I get the message as I won't be
going to Vista.

These are the same things that were said before XP's release. I wouldn't
worry much. I know that I will probably not update from XP/XP Pro right away
anyhow. The one thing that WILL be a must is 64bit compatibility by sometime
around 2007-2008 or so. MS wants to sell a lot of copies of Vista, so as
long as you have a somewhat recent system it should be fine.
