Ok, I write to this forum in hopes that others have tried this with success
or can maybe point me in a better direction than this forum can provide. So
Here Goes Nothing. I am a life long user of MS titles starting with 95 then
on to 98 and XP in turn. I was not looking forward to the Vista because I
did not feel as though I wanted to learn a new system right now. I truly
enjoyed XP SP2 and was quite happy spending the next several years running
smoothly. Disaster Struck! Due to circumstances beyond my control I had to
get a new laptop and due to my employee purchase program, I was unable to
get a laptop that still had windows XP preinstalled on it! I was not overly
dismayed when it came to Vista as MS usually knows what they are doing. So I
got the new machine and OH MY GOD- - - - - - - - - - - - The
Bloody thing is slower than my 450 MHz P3 with 256Mbs of ram... What the
(insert profanity here) is up with this (insert profanity here again). I am
looking for a fast machine with a quick zippy operating system, not a 600lbs
woman on a treadmill! ok so enough with the rant, back to the question at
hand. I have been told by Dell that my NEW laptop will not support me
uninstalling Vista and putting XP on it. I can't understand why. Has anyone
tried this yet? Does anyone recommend this? Talk to me people. If nothing
else, can someone at least tell me how to make this woman loose 500 lbs?

Usually new computers have a lot of crap loaded onto them. Look in your
system tray and see if there are icons for a bunch of stuff you don't need.
Then try to stop them from starting when you turn on the computer. I'm not
saying that's the problem, but it might help, especially with only 256MB of
RAM.

Also, and much more important..... Any way you can convince your employer to
buy more ram for you?

The OP didn't say how much RAM the lap top has, only what a desktop he
has has.

I have 2 gig of ram... I have uninstalled everything but the most essential
of programs, I have turned off every frill that Vista had to offer and still
this is beyond slow... I've spent more time looking at that little "O" timer
than actually using the programs it's trying to start for me. I want my XP
back. has anyone tried to uninstall the Vista and reinstall XP yet on the
new Vista read Dells?

You would have no issues installing XP on there, other than the support
issue. All the hardware should be supported with no problem.

Some people are perfectly happy with XP SP2, and prefer it to Vista. I say
go for it!

My concern, though, is that it might not provide the speed boost the OP is
expecting.

I've upgraded my machine from XP to Vista, and I couldn't honestly say that
Vista is noticeably slower. In fact, it feels faster. The boot seems
slightly faster, and the Readyfetch (sp??) feature - which learns what
programs you use, and when, and preloads the relevant files into RAM - seems
to make a big difference to the start up times of the programs I use.

So, if the machine really is intolerably slow, I'm not convinced the problem
will go away by going back to XP.

I am a hardcore gamer and have found that Vista is not noticably slower than
XP Pro was. Framerates and loadtimes are the same.

It would seem that he has a hardware or maybe a driver problem.

hmmm .. Vista is faster than bs thru a liar here ...
See your Laptop vendor, but then you knew that, didn't you?

The tone of your message is nothing if not fishy :)
