Windows Vista Logon

Patches

Hello all!
Curious problem that I have not found an answer to anywhere else: I recently
set a password for my user account in Vista Home Premium, which worked fine
when I locked the account and unlocked it again to try it out. After
restarting, however, it wouldn't accept the password! There's only my account
and a disabled guest account, and I use the password for some of my online
accounts, so I know I got the password right. I got back into Windows by
using the password reset on my USB-stick, but it's weird... and it gets
better!

Today I locked the account while I was in the library, and when I got back I
couldn't log back in! Switching users, however, and then logging in with the
locked account worked... so password and user account are fine, it just
doesn't always get accepted. Anyone heard of this?

Perhaps your keyboard is faulty and fails intermittently such that the wrong
characters are registered when you type. If you can you might try another
keyboard. Just a thought.

All of those files used for password encryption are part of the set watched
by SFC. I suggest trying that.
There is also a "Startup Repair" feature you might consider, available from
a boot to a recovery CD (some OEM's make a bios key access, e.g. Dell uses
F12)

Thanks, just gave SFC a try, but unfortunately no joy. Good to know about
that feature though.

I've got AVG free edition. Tried uninstalling it and going through the whole
process again. No joy :(

What firewall, anti-virus application or security suite is installed? There
are some that cause problems.
