Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 & Win2k3 Ent network

M

Matt Beals

I have a share, \\server\username\ that I need to access from a Vista
Home Premium SP1 laptop from a wired or a wireless connection. I cannot
get Vista to see *any* other device on the network. I have tried to
connect with:
\\server\sharename
\\IPaddress\sharename with no luck

The share is supposed to only have read/write/modify permissions for
domainadmins and user, but I've added "everyone" with "full control" to
get it to connect. Any ideas?

Thank you,

I'm not sure it is possible for a Home version of Windows to access
domain resources. I know it isn't possible for them to join the domain,
but I don't know if authenticating to a domain is possible. You might
have better luck asking in the .networking_sharing group.

I get a lot of spam anyways, so a little more isn't going to hurt my
spam filter. What is surprising is how much traffic is generated with
such BS in it. If you don't want to help, don't respond. I thought that
there might actually be some professionals here...

So does anyone actually have anything productive to contribute to
answering my question?

I was able to "add" the laptop to the domain by changing the workgroup.
So I should at least be able to see other computers. Even so, shouldn't
I be able to use the Vista laptop to connect to another non-domain
computers public (everyone r/w) share? I've got a Fedora 10 workstation
that is not part of the domain, does not use domain/AD authentication,
only uses local users in Samba.

Vista Home in any flavor will not see any share and especially on the Enterprise.
Believe me . I am using Enterprise and any way that I have tried with Home it does
not go. Pro,Ultimate,Business does work as I have successfully achieved it with all
the latter.

I also believe and do not hold me to it but Jack Ezlam MS MVP Networking had a
workaround for this .
You can find him on the following newsgroups
microsoft.public.networking_web
microsoft.public.networking.wireless

And his site is

What server is hosting this share? Can you ping the server? Do you get an
error trying to access the share? It's not relevant whether it's on a domain
or not FYI as you should be prompted for authentication if it is.

The share is hosted on Win2k3 Ent server. The server does respond to
ping and FTP. The error is "An unexpected error has occurred". There is
no prompt for authentication.

When I try to connect to a share on a Windows XP SP3 laptop I get the
same error as above.

Problem solved.

The solution as it turns out was rather simple, and something I had
forgotten about. In active directory the user had been limited to log
onto one specific computer, the old laptop he was using. Once I removed
the restriction he was able to access the network share on the server
from Vista.

Thank you all for your assistance.
