Hi, my laptop has problems in recognizing USB devices.
When I start the system and plug in any USB device, such as wireless
mouse, mobile hard drive or any other USB device, the system can't
recognize. When I use other laptops or desktops, they can recognize
those USB devices.
Sometimes the system can be recover after I restart it, but this
problem will happen again when I start the laptop in the next time.
And sometimes it can't recover after restart the windows.

DO anyone know how to resolve this problem????

There are many variations on this theme, so details are important.
Does Vista say it can't find drivers, or some other error?

Thanks for your reply.
When I plug the USB device, the system says that one of the USB
devices attached to the computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does
not recognize it.

Actually my laptop has three USB ports, when I plug a USB device and
check the device manager, it shows 4 ports, three unused ports, one
unknown device.
And I think it is strange, could anybody explain it??

Are these ports USB 1.x by any chance? I've seen this problem with 1.x but
not 2.x.

what you can try and has worked in other circumstances.
go into Device Manager.
scroll down to USB devices.
right click on the Root Hub entries, one at a time and select the UNINSTALL.
when done, exit device manager.
shut down the computer for 3-5 minutes.
power backup and allow the computer to find and install the USB ports.
then try it again.

I tried that, I uninstalled the USB hoot hub, and then restart the
computer after 10 min.
And then the computer installed those hub automatically.
But when I plug USB device, the same thing happened.
The system still couldn't recognize the USB device.

What should I do????

its possibly a defective port.
how old is the computer, too old to get manufacturer support.

No, it is a new laptop. I bought it three months ago, it applys one
year warranty. So I think the only way for me is to ask the Store and
the company. The worst thing is to send the laptop to the company and
let them to repair it.

First I will go to the Future Shop and ask the real reason for causing
the problem, and then finalize my decision.

Hi

Did you resolve this issue with your laptop? I recently port a laptop and
windows cant recognise my printer, phone or mouse, its very frustrating.

This solution has worked for some people with problematic USB devices:

Locate the file INFCACHE.1 in C:\Windows\inf

Right click on the INFCACHE.1 file, select Properties >Security > Edit, and give
your account full control.

Delete INFCACHE.1, or rename it to INFCACHE.1.BAK or temporarily move to your
desktop.

REBOOT

Me too! After upgrading to Windows Vista, my e-Machine T6212 won't recognize
any usb flash memory devices (from different companies, to boot). It keeps on
telling me to install a driver when everyone knows flash memory devices don't
need drivers: even the companies that made then don't have drivers on their
websites. I've also found a thread in the Microsoft Technet site
(http://forums.microsoft.com/technet...2&siteid=17&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=1)
where there were a lot of other people suffering from the same problem. Some
people offered some solutions but they involved going deep into the registry,
and I don't think I want to risk that because if something goes wrong, I
won't know how to fix it. Think this is becoming a really big issue.

"fourcarnations" gagged on this one...

Really? Have you checked under 'support' or 'drivers' or 'software' lately?
USB flash drives and other media storage devices are*usually* Plug'n'Play
compatible, so Windows already has native drivers for most models, and many
are compatible with both XP and Vista, although older versions of windows,
such as 98SE, required drivers to be downloaded. Name a brand and model
number before you make blanket statements that can't be supported with
facts.

http://www.usbflashdrive.org/usbfd_faq.html#oldercomputer
"Q. I have an older computer-where can I find a driver to download so I can
use a USB flash drive?

A. Most USB flash drives use mass storage class drivers. These are included
in Windows 2000 and Windows XP. In order to operate under Windows 98 SE, a
USB flash drive typically requires a driver that you can obtain from the
manufacturer of the USB flash drive, through their customer service support
number or Web site."

Independent examples...

NOTE: Windows 98 drivers are available online at www.lexar.com/drivers
USB Flash Drives http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/DriverDownloads.aspx
Download Files http://www.ktipromo.com/download.aspx
Drivers http://www.kingston.com/support/downloads/usbdatatrav/default.asp

You'll find some flash drives are tagged "Certified" or "Compatible" with
Vista, but some manufacturers have not yet updated their websites with Vista
compatibility information.
