Windows Virus?

M

maxhammer16

I recently recieved an e-mail describing a virus called
jdbgm. Supposedly, it attacks the hard drives through
your address book. When I searched for it I found it and
the teddy bear icon. I deleted both from my hard drives.
Was this really a virus or was it harmless? Even more
importantly, did I delete something potentially important
to Windows ?

Yes you did. Never, ever believe emails. That's what AV,Spybot & AdAware
programs AND GOOGLE are there for.

I hope that you realize now not to just delete something
from your system files because of an e/mail.
For most people what you deleted will not even be
noticed,it has to do with java applet programming. And if
you where into that you never would have deleted it.

Hi there...
Be careful on just about any advice you receive email or otherwise
unless it comes from a very trusted site and reliable source.
There have even been problems with emails arriving as if they are coming
from Microsoft with attachments, but MS will never send an attachment
within an email.
There are so many scams out there that a user can very easily be tricked
into opening these things. Maybe warnings that you haven't responded to
something urgent, or your account needs to be corrected or updated by
clicking here, etc..etc..
Best advice...don't click anything in your email unless you absolutely
know something is arriving you are aware of and even then...always save
something to hard drive first...then scan it for a virus...even a trojan
program can be used and from the right click menu you can do both the
virus and trojan scans, etc...
Run programs such as updated AntiVirus
Firewall
Good Spyware programs such as the free:
AdAware
and
Spybot S&D
Maybe even a trojan program such as The Cleaner

Anyway...you can always get this back if you want it by reinstalling the
MS JVM.

Take Care...

Greetings --

Assuming that you're misspelling the file name:

This is a very, very old hoax; one of the oldest currently in
circulation. If your antivirus software is current and detects
nothing, you're most likely safe. Do nothing with the named file,
delete the email, and tell whomever sent you the original message to
check their facts before spreading rumors.

It's important to remember that almost _any_ email virus warning
is a hoax, designed primarily to bog down email systems by having
well-meaning but uniformed people send out hundreds of otherwise
valueless email warnings. When you receive a warning like this, the
*first* thing you should do is check its veracity at one or more of
the following web sites:

Symantec Security Response - Hoax Page

F-Secure Security Information Center - Hoaxes
