I just built my Grandma a new computer. I got XP activated. (She had XP
activated on her old one but I moved it to the new one.) I did not have to
call Microsoft to get it activated and it worked right over the Internet. I
downloaded updates onto a CD on my computer and did the updates off of the
CD at her house. My computer has cable and hers doesn't and this is why I
did this. Anyway, I got done installing all of the updates and after that,
I restarted the computer. Now it comes up saying that something is causing
it to not be able to tell the license on it, so it will not allow a user to
logon. So, I restarted it and booted it in safe mode. I used system
restore and brought it back before I started the updates. It worked, and
the updates won't show in add/remove programs. I tried to reinstall the
updates and restart after each install until I ran across the problem, so I
could tell which update was causing the license conflict, but now the
updates won't install. Are the updates still installed? I go to
Microsoft's website and it shows that the 56k modem computer has all sorts
of updates to download. (This is why I tried to one update at a time) She
has the Windows XP SP1 CD.

.I cant help you with the other problem, but if you want
to ensure that the updates have been installed there is a
great program that you can access at this
website,http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php
it runs a comprehensive scan of your entire system and
shows everything thats installed it also gives
suggestions for optimizing the computer. I am having
trouble after getting the blaster worm virus and can not
access add/remove programs so I wasnt sure if the updates
had installed properly. I hope this helps.
