Windows updates

I have downloaded an update but have had the following message when trying to
install:-"
Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8007f007 update
for Windows XP(KB898461) and the same message for error 0x8007f0da MS Windows
installer. The problem is that every time i try to shut down the computer
tries to install said updates and fails. I then seem to have a problem the
next time I start up. How do i get rid of the update that cannot be installed?

Do you have the latest update to 'Windows Installer' on your PC?

sorry to appear ignorant but how do i know if I have the latest update to
installer?

I believe if you use/goto the Windows Update site it will automatically
check for the most recent update.
or search for a file named MSI.DLL, the version should be: 3.1.4000.2435
