Windows Updates

Hi Everyone, I know this is not the place for this..but I want to run
something by you all.

I have been having trouble with certain updates...KB890923, i have an xp pro
sp2 machine, i go to update site, it says i need this, along with 17 others,
after installing the above mentioned update, the machine stops after signing
on, a small box appears and says, windows has encountered a problem, you can
go no further...now, if it requires previous updates, it should tell me....i
think this is a major problem...

KB 885835, install it, internet access is no longer working...have to go to
last know good config to remove...

what is going on with these ??

I would guess the system is damaged in some way. I would try a Repair, or 'upgrade' setup. Maybe SFC, first try.

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW

If you run an XP "Upgrade"setup, from the original, or "Gold" version of the setup CD, and you have SP2 installed, it might go into
a setup loop, and you could lose your install. Uninstall SP2, BEFORE you Upgrade setup from CD (that lacks sp2 on it.)

Then try the update again.

I know how to roll back to sp1...the problem is absolutley related to sp2, i
have rolled back 3 machines to sp1, downloaded and installed over 40 updates
without incident...i spoke to aan update specialist at Mocrosoft yesterday,
he ageed something in sp2 is not jiving...the answer, we do not really need
sp2 anyway...
