Windows Updates Wont Update

Starting July 14th my window update files stopped
updating. I noticed it when the BITS 2.0 kept trying to
install repeatedly but would not do it. So I checked my
douwload history and almost everything from july 14
forward says failed. Any ideas on what might have caused
this?

I tried to do system restores back to before 07/14, but,
like many posts here, I just keep getting the error that
it will not restore try another date. So I'm at a total
loss and I don't want to not get the security updates.
AND I DO NOT have SP2. Based on the number of posts here
with all sorts of problems, I don't want it.

Additional info...Today I tried to d/l directly from the

download center. When I tried to install the security
updates the error is 'ASN1 unexpected end of data'. I
haven't any idea what this means or how to fix if.
