Windows Updates Not Working Properly

Windows updates is set to notify me when updates are available and let
me decide when to install them. The problem is that it keeps notifying
me even after the updates have been installed and keeps re-installing
them.

Haven't found any help with this on MS site. Has anyone else
experienced this?

I am running Win XP-Home SP2.

Howdy,
I suggest you set Automatic Updates to "notify" but not to download. Re-review your setting.

I suggest the following house-cleaning steps:

(to be sure to see all folders)
Check the Windows Explorer "View" options --- set it to show you all folders; all system folders; & hidden files.
Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

(to clean up downloaded files for Automatic updates / Windows Update)
From main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>

If the very same updates are offered again, please post back with specific details, including the description of updates offered.

Best to you & salute from one vet to another ;-)

Thanks Maurice...followed all your steps...
however am still experiencing the same problem...see below.

Initially I received the following after following all your steps:

The following were not installed.
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - March 2006 (KB890830)
Updates were unable to be successfully installed.

Closed it out and the update notice appeared again.

Ran the d/l and install again and it indicated that it installed
successfully.

Closed out and in less than a minute the notice appeared that "Updates
are ready for your computer." And it was for the same update.

Strange puzzlement!

Appreciate your help!
