when i go to windows update theres a update for my
comp. in the opional hardware updates it reads: Ati
tech. , inc. display software update.

i have a ati radeon 9800xt and have been having a
little trouble with it , and was wondering if i need to
get this update. is this a driver?

It is better to download/install the drivers from ATI's web site instead of
using the ones offered on the Windows Update page:
