Windows update

when i go to windows update it prompts me to get microsoft update. if i click
this or either of the links to check for updates i got told that the files
required are no longer registered or installed on my computer. i then click
to register/install. this then takes me back to the original page prompting
me to get microsoft update! i seem to be going round in circles. i've tried
deleting update and reinstalling it but i get the same problem. checking my
history i haven't had a download for 8 months. there isn't a restart point
far enough back. what can i do??
