windows update

I have a compaq presario on a network. Ever since I have
been updating windows xp I cannot locate shared files on
the network hub without going the long way around. But
the most irritating problem is when I am on the Web and
hit the refresh button, or when I try to access certain
sites, I get a pop-up that says the site is not available
off-line. Sometimes I can hit the "connect" button and
all is fine, other times another pop-up displays to
connect to a dial-up (we are on DSL). Other times I
cannot bypass no matter what.

I really appreciate how Microsoft is available to help in
this matter that I have to post to a newsgroup but can
anyone help anyway? Thank you.

Dean,

Lets start with the problems you have connecting to the Internet. What is
the setting for "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings" under
Internet Explorer's Tools | Internet Options | Connections? I am
specifically interested in the three radial buttons and which is checked.
Can you give me an idea of your networked environment? DHCP? Statis IP's?
Domain?
