I am trying to download the below listed critical updates
to XP from the Microsoft web. It appears to download
allright but during the installation process I get a
message which reads that "NO UPDATES WERE INSTALLED"

Security Update for Windows XP (823980)

Security Update for Windows XP (819696)

817606: Security Update (Windows XP)

811630: Critical Update (Windows XP)

331953: Security Update (Windows XP)

Prior to this attempt I was able to download and install
several other critical updates with no problems. Note
that I have turned off my virus protection software and
tried to download and reinstall several times, always
with the same proble,

Try troubleshooting it by downloading and installing one
at a time.

Any error messages?

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Catroot2 folder.
Right click the catroot2 folder and rename it to Catrrot2old. Exit and try
the Windows Update downloads again.

If no joy, see the following troubleshooter for WU. Look for the specific
behavior you are experiencing.

If you still cannot get the files installed, note the file names and go

Go to this page and click on the "Find updates for Microsoft Windows
operating systems."

From here, you can select your Operating System and then click one of these
options:


Critical Updates and Service Packs

Additional Windows Downloads
Internet and Multimedia Updates
Windows Tools

You will be able to download these updates directly to your desktop and
install them whenever you wish. Double click the files to install.

Every time I switch on the Automatic Updates tries to download and
install 819696. Every time it succeeds without any apparent problem.
And then next time it tries to do the same again.
