I found that dial-up connections are not reliable enough to download
large files. Is there a solution for this from Micro$oft?

Could I ask a cousin or friend to download the updates into files for me
and have them moved to my PC via a USB drive?

You can download individual updates from the Catalog and save to be
installed later.
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx

Click Add button for each update you want to download. Once you have what
you want, Click the "Go To Download Basket" link. Type in or browse to the
location where you want the updates saved to and then Click the "Download
Now" button.
Once downloaded, you can then burn them to CD.

Hi,

A easy way for you to download them is to go here and install "Windows
Updates Downloader"
http://www.windowsupdatesdownloader.com/Default.aspx

It shows Critical, Service Packs and Other, so this way you can choose
Critical and it will show you which files you need without all the other
files you really don't need.
