Very, very slow. I cancel and try again next day. Still too slow to endure.
Is there some setting I've overlooked that is interfering, or what? 15
downloads waiting, estimated time 4 minutes.

How about deleting your corrupted
<C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution> folder so that a new fresh one
is created by the system?

Let us know if you want step by step instructions to do this.

There are a lot of updates this week and there are a lot of computers to
update in the world.

Do you use the "shield" icon in the taskbar or go directly to the Windows
Update site "Start|All Programs|Windows Update"? I understand there is a
priority difference between the two.

I tried to move to the recycle bin the c:\windows\sosftware distributioin
folder, but the action was denied: "Cannot delete reporting events log -
being used by ...another program". I closed all open programs, tried again,
no luck. I Might be able to delete in Safe Mode. Would you recommend this?
How to determine if folder is corrupted?

Please provide a source for that statement.

And which is supposed to be the higher priority?

I don't remember the source, I think it was right here in this group.

When you use the "shield" icon it uses a technology that works in the
background.

When you use WU site, you're directly interacting with the site so the
results are "immediate".

So using the Windows Update site is faster, try it.

There are two ways of doing this. The one I find the easiest is
by rebooting your system into safe mode. To do this, switch off
and switch on your system and at the same time keep pressing F8
key until you get a black screen with white writings. With your
arrow keys, go to the top most item called Safe Mode and you will
get a prompt whether you are sure you want to go into safe mode.
Just click yes and this will take you to funny looking screen
(this is expected because nothing is loaded - not even your video
drivers)

Now you can launch your Windows Explorer and go to the directory:

<C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution>

Delete everything from this and your are done. Now reboot the
system in the normal way and Windows will be able to download all
the missing patches on your system. It will be very fast indeed
and you want believe it!

The second method is stop the process called: wuauclt.exe. Once
this process is stopped from the task Manager, You will be able to
delete everything from the said folder.
