Justin

When I click on windows update and it scans for available
updates, I get an error. The error message says "Windows
Update has encountered an error. This may be due to a
discrepancy in your computer's time setting." I've been
running my computer without all these updates but
recently my friend formatted and he was downloading the
updates. Now i want to download the updates also. Please
send your thoughts.

Hi Justin,

To check your date and time setting, follow these steps:
a) On the taskbar, double-click the time.
b) Verify that the date and time is correct.

Try to install the downloaded Windows update. If the problem still occurs,
rename the folder C:\Windows\System32\CatRoot2\ to force Windows to
recreate the EDB database.

1. Click Start, My Computer
2. Open the C drive
3. Open the Windows folder
4. Open the System32 folder
5. Locate the CatRoot2 folder and rename it to CR2OLD.
6. Close the window, and try installing the Critical Updates again.

Now, you can install Windows Updates in Windows XP.

Hi Justin,

Verify that your computer's date and time are accurate and that the Internet
Explorer language option is not empty.

To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:

1. Click "Tools" and then choose "Internet Options"
2. Click the "Languages" button
3. Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language Options"
dialog.
