Windows update problem

Hi.
When i try to visit this site there are problems.Win
XP,SP2.

You could try locating it by typing in 'v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

I am experiencing a similar problem. When selecting windows update or going
directly to the URL 'v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com', my browser locks up. I
have tried typing the regsvr32 commands, still have the same problem. Any
other recommendations?

You are seeing a generic message. Suggestion A: Put some MS sites in Trusted Sites list of IE browser.
Internet Explorer > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.

Look very closely at line that says:

"Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone" to
*clear* the selection.
(e.g. You want that to be un-checked (un-ticked)).

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to
list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://*.download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (with HTTPS)

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Click OK. Apply changes to IE browser.

Retry Windows Update.

Suggestion B: If still no joy, start on some research.
Look for file WindowsUpdate.log in your C:\Windows folder ( or it may be C:\WINNT on your system).

Use Notepad or Wordpad to open & view contents. Scan down to the very bottom. Copy the set of lines for that last session-date & paste back into a reply in here.

Maurice...I am having a similar problem except when I try to use Update...I
get a message that I'm not using Windows. Obviously I am.

I recently reloaded the computer and it was working fine, now all of a
sudden it won't let me update the system...any ideas?

Are you receiving the following error message while visiting the
WindowsUpdate page?

"You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to
use Windows Update"

This has to do with third-party firewall / Proxy servers. If you're using
Norton Internet Security / Personal Firewall, see this page for the
solution.

For Sygate Firewall, use this configuration, posted by someone earlier:

Hello Dawn,

Check the programs that are actively running on your pc when you visit Windows Update. Do any of them have a feature for anonymous surfing?

Is any add-on program or security program blocking the User Agent field? Example of that type program is Norton Internet Security --- which can "mask" the identifiable features in your browser, and makes it tougher for Windows Update to tell what browser & what Windows edition you have.

If you have Norton Personal Firewall / Norton Internet Security or Sygate Personal Firewall , insure they allow
showing a valid User Agent string for the Internet Explorer browser. Check the settings.
Otherwise, Windows Update will assume & show you might be running an unknown Windows version.
