Windows update not installing

Windows update automatically downloaded the "Update for Background
Intelligent Transfer service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773) patch but
when i click on install it is not getting installed. I get the install
message again.

This has also stopped Norton to start at the time of booting. I am not able
to start it manually as well. I am not able to open msconfig. The msconfig
screen pops up for a second and disappears. I am not able to use even
Ctrl+Alt+Del. Even that window opens and disappears in less than a second.

But the machine is boots and shuts down without any problem. All the other
applications are also running without any problem. What could be the reason?

Are you low on free space on your hard drive?

Hi Bill,

Thanks. Sorry for the late reply. I had enough free disk space but the
problem was with some virus. I later identified it by starting up in safe
mode and using the msconfig (which started then) the programs that are
starting during system boot.
