Windows Update no long works after repair-reinstall

Hi,

This all started because I was having problems installing Money 2006
Deluxe. After working with MS and Dell support here is what I've done and
where I stand...

MS and Dell said I couldn't install Money 2006 Deluxe because of security
settings in IE were corrupted and needed to be repaired, here is what I tried:

1) tried uninstalling and reinstalling, that didn't work
2) tried installing it after booting in safe mode, that didn't work either
3) did a repair-reinstall of Win XP SP2, that didn't work AND NOW I CANNOT
INSTALL ANY UPDATES ON MY COMPUTER

When I go to the Windows update page the first update it finds is MS
Windows Installer 3.1, it has tried to install that several times but it does
not work.

Any ideas?

Try downloading windows installer to desktop,reinstall.Also,you need to
at least run,CHKDSK C: /F From cmd,disk clean up,then defrag,since
reinstalling SP2 again.Once all is done,go to microsoft home page,click
on "microsoft update" it replaced windows update.Also,some windows
components get uninstalled from SP2,open windows components in add/remove
programs (reinstall the network components).

Hi Andrew,

To reinstall the network components do I need to de-select them in
Add/Remove Windows Components click "next" (to remove them) and then go back
in and select them and click "next" to install them?
