Windows update errors

I have just spent several hours going through various posts with suggestions
about how to fix 8000FFFF errors that numerous people seem to be getting with
Windows Update. I have tried the two most common solutions (editing the
registry and renaming the software distribution folder) neither of which
worked. I'm looking for clear answers to the following questions:
1. Are there other solutions out there that an experience computer user (but
not a technical expert) could try?
2. If not, is this something that Microsoft is working on?
3. Is there some better way of finding solutions than searching through
posts on?multiple forums with no indication whatsoever of which suggestions
are up-to-date or reliable?

To resolve Windows Update error 8000FFFF, try the following steps:

1) Launch REGEDIT
2) Go into HKLM\COMPONENTS, and check if these three values exist under the COMPONENTS key:

PendingXmldentifier
NextQueueEntryIndex
AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving

3) Providing they do exist, back up the Components key, then delete the three above values.
4) Restart the computer, and Windows Update should now be working fine.

Thanks, Carey. I tried that already, but those three values do not exist
under the components key.
