This is a really hard one. After accessing the Windows Update site, I
can't get past the windows welcome screen. I never get the screen with
the message "scan for updates. The error in the log says 0x80072F76 and
I have tried everything in the update troubleshooting note for this
error -- turning off the firewall and virus checker, removing temp
files, removing the hosts.sam file, etc. I have also done lots of other
things like reinstalling IE6, setting IE security to accept all ActiveX,
setting microsoft.com as a trusted site and so on. Nothing works. I
still get the same error message.

What is really strange is that when I try to access the "test site"
given in the troubleshooting suggestions for this error message (to
confirm that my problem is in my own internet connection), I can access
the site! This indicates that the problem is *not* in my connection,
contrary to what the error message indicates.

Even more strange is that automatic updates also does not work. The
updates are downloaded, but not installed.

MS "online help" just reads the KB files to me. Does anyone have any
other suggestions?

I have already gone to this site and followed all the suggestions in it.
None of them worked. That is why I posted to this newsgroup. There is
something going on here which MS is not aware of, and I was hoping that
someone could offer some suggestions which are not in the
troubleshooting article at the MS site.

I am pretty sure that it has to do with using a HPNA adapter some of the
time, but even when I disconnect it and go via a normal dialup line, I
get this error.

Problem solved! The trouble -- hard to belive, but true -- was the modem
driver. When I replaced it, the site works fine. Replacing the dialup
modem driver also fixed my LAN connection to the update site! I do not
understand this, but I am using a new ASUS motherboard, and there may be
some BIOS issues here as well.
