I've searched this NG back to October 1, and didn't see my
problem.
Windows Update stopped working about six months ago. When
there is something new, the icon shows up in the system
tray, and seems to do everything on my system just as it
should. However, when I check and click for it to
download, nothing happens. The icon goes away for that
session, and usually reappears the following day.
If I go to the Windows Update (or any other indicated)
page here, and look for new updates, the MS server checks
my system and shows me the proper updates (I make a note
of the update numbers from the WUpdate icon) and installs
them without problems. So it's not as though I have
trouble getting the updates.
I did not install any new software last spring. I have
installed new software in the last couple of months,
however, and am not prepared to uninstall my AV, thanks
very much.
My system is an unaltered Compaq Presario 5737. I am
running XP Home, installed in September 2002 as an upgrade
to W98SE. I have a dialup connection to a well-known
national ISP.
It would reduce the hassle if I could get the Update
applet to work. It is set up for full automatic operation,
and I liked that just fine.
TIA for any help!
