Windows Update does not update...receives ActiveX message

A

ashbudk

When trying to use Windows Update in Internet Explorer 6
(SP1)on a Windows XP Media Center machine, I receive the
following message:

"Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX
controls on this page. As a result, the page may not
display correctly."

The screen then shows some administrator features in the
right pane, but nothing on how to resolve receiving
updates.

Also, there are some sure sites "https://" that can not be
reached even though this version has 128-bit encryption.

Any ideas?

Thank you,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Lets try re-registering some *.dll files.

Choose Start, Run and enter the following: regsvr32 softpub.dll
and press enter
Do the same for the following files:
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

After you re-register these dll's, restart your system and test.

Given the two problems, also check your system for "hijackware":

Dealing with Hijackware
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#tshoot
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

HijackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip) is the
preferred tool to use these days. It will help to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.
