I had to do a System Restore and now Windows Update no longer scans. I get
the WU window with the message: "Checking fo the latest version of Windows
Update....." but that is all, it does not scan or do anything else. I'm
running WindowsXP-Home with SP1, since I didn't want to run the SP2 CD before
making sure that all needed updates are installed. Is it ok to run SP2 even
though there is a problem with WU. I really appreciate some expert help to
resolve this.
thanks,

Hi

You could try the steps in this post to try to get WU to work:

http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

Also, if you have Windows XP SP2 installed, check that the
WuWebControlClass is enabled in Internet Explorer:

If nothing of the above worked, try the steps in this post:

Here are some more steps you can try if the above was of no help:

"Software update incomplete" error message when you visit the
Windows Update Web site

Hello Torgeir:
Wow, you are a genius! I tried your first suggestion and it worked. I saved
the info in case I run into this problem again. Thank you very much for your
prompt and helpful answer.
