I see that Windows Update indicated Failed on some of the patches. How do I
try again? I don't see that option anywhere.
TIA

Hi

If any updates have failed you can try either rebooting your PC and then
going back to Windows Update or have a look in the Windows Update.log file -
which is in the Windows folder - for any error numbers and see if they are
referenced here:

Good Morning Will.

Thank you for the location I obviously need. I would however like to ask if
there is a way to search all this reading material as I am seeing what is a
"Library Error" which doesn't seem to fit any of the catagories. It is not a
driver and not software. I never had a problem or error report just that I
happen to notice the "Failed" description when reviewing the installed
patches and updates.

Thanks

Hi

Which particular Update does the 'Library Error' refer to? It is only possible to search the page, not the text within each error message. You might like to try the microsoft.public.windowsupdate news group for the 'Library Error'.

Hi

Try this:

In the Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4 folder there is a file called iuhist.xml - copy or move that file to a difference location - and then delete that folder. Try Windows Update again.

OK, now this will be having me reinstall everything on top of the onces
that are already insatlled like SP1. This will not hurt to install over
onces already there?

Hi Proctor

Hopefully you will get a fresh copy of iuident.cab installed into that folder when you have visited WU and will show the Hotfixes that you are missing. If you are offered any Hotfixes, pull out before downloading/installing any of them, and replace the iuident.cab file in the V4 folder - it is used when you click on 'View Installation History' on the WU page. Then go back to WU. WU shouldn't offer you any Hotfixes that are already installed.

I've just tested this, and WU will only offer those Hotfixes - Security/Critical or Recommended - that aren't already installed on your system, so there shouldn't be any cause to install any Hotfixes over the top of those already installed.
