Why is there so many processes running in windows task
manager, EG sychost 5 times and others. We are running
windows xp on a network through a hub.We have 512 mb of
ram.
It is just that my partners game keeps locking up. We
wondered if any of these could be ended.
Regards
Janet

You can Disable the unecessary processes from services under the administrative tools in the control Panel , to save your Memory .

Your Computer maybe Infected with Spywares and adwares usually runs in the memory , you can download adware remover or spysweeper from www.webroot.com / update the defenitions and scan your pc .

you can check your registry for the startup apps and processes under the following keys .

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
you can find more information about the registry in
http://www.winguides.com/registry/

Multiple instances of svchost are normal. But I venture to guess that
when they start adding up it may mean that you are running quite of bit
of perhaps, background apps you may not need to. It's nice to minimize
the number of apps you have set to start on startup.

For example, you may have a scanner that you only use once/week. And
many scanner softwares when you install it its set to run on bootup.
It's silly.

These are largely components of the system that run as individual
processes. Eg explorer for the desktop if no more. Svchost is the
interface that runs a slew of different services - they get loaded in
batches, hence the several instances.

You may also have your AV, third party firewall, support for third party
keyboard and mouse, and possibly control addons provided with things
like video drivers
