Windows task manager help ...

Hi there,

Now its not a problem as such, now i get this message poping up in the
system tray saying that im running low on virtual memory and that some
programs may not be able to run.

Now i go to my task manager ( ctrl>alt>delete) and go to the processes tab
and close all the programs i know that are running and i know for sure i dont
need running.

now my question is , is this the way to free-up some vertual memory? by
killing the processes? and without needing to spend money on more memory.
And second of all i need to know, is there a way i can do a search of some
sort to find out which is which example " explorer.exe" What dose this do
and is it safe to disable?

I hope you all under stand where im coming from and hope you can help.

thanks in advance.

How is your virtual memory managed? It sounds like you have a hard max
set, something that should never be done. Instead you should change
this to a system managed size so it can grow as needed.

To adjust this, right click on My Computer and select Properties. Go to
the Advanced tab and click the settings button next to Performance. go
to the Advanced tab and click Change under Virtual Memory. There change
it to System managed size.

For a more in depth discussion of virtual memory and how to tweak it for
your specific usage see http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm.

increase your virtual memory
to a fixed size, obviously it
is too low and the o.s. continues
to tell you that it needs to resize
it automatically. however some
computers function better with
a fixed size rather than in automatic
resizing mode.

set your virtual memory to a custom
size of min=2 and max=1152

these sizes seem to work well
and they can be resized later.

here is some additional fyi and instructions
on the subject:
http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/getstarted/pcproblems.mspx

the link above suggests making
both the min and max the same.
but if i recall, there is an issue
with not having a lower min size,
so I set the min of 2 megs.

I think it involves hibernation and
it may not work if the min size is not
low...

but you can fine tune it now that
you know how to do it...

For starters go to Start/Run/Msconfig

Startup - Uncheck everything that you don't need running. Some are most
expanatory.
Note: XP needs nothing listed there to boot.
Services - Mark off the box that reads Hide All MS-Services.

For more information go to Start/Run: services.msc

Added info: Services - http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
