windows/system32/config/system - Help Please

K

KennethKS

Sorry for the post but I'm a bit helpless. One day I'm fine and dandy. Then
the power cord gets unplugged. Load back up and I get the "Windows could not
load because WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is missing or corrupt".

OS - Windows XP Media Center
Able to boot with a CD.
Not able to boot with floppy disks. (new laptop)
My OS is OEM from Dell.
Have access to Windows Xp CD but its and upgrade version.

I've tried a few different ways that I've seen on the forums but no luck.
Could someone please post a link to an EZ to follow walk-threw.
Or even if its possible, a way to restore using a restore point from System
Restore...I make frequent restore points. But I don't know how to open System
Restore from Recovery Console.

I'm still able to use Media Direct to view pictures/movies/music.

Please help. And Thanks.

We need a complete copy of the Stop Error code which I imagine appears
when you try to boot in the normal manner.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure even after you have
solved the problem as it's better disabled. Check for variants of the
Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

Hope this helps.

yeh, it is not an uncommon
problem. what likely happened
is that while your registry was
either being read or written to
the loss of power corrupted
it.

here are the instructions to
regain functionality:

Googling the text of that error message should lead you directly (the first
entry) to the MS KB article that describes the way to fix this,

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

You can't get to System Restore from the Recovery Console. Follow the
directions at the link.

Now would also be a good time to evaluate your backup strategies.
