once you bootup from you XP cd and go to the repair console

log on to you c: drive and navigate to your windows\system32\config folder

now rename "system" to system.bad

then you should have another "system" file with an extention on it such as
system.bak or system.sav

simply rename that to "system" with no extention...
now reboot and you should have your system up and running...

you may want to run a HD and RAM diagnostic after that

I cant make out what you are saying. The fact that when I choose 1 it gives
me c:\MiniNT> AND NOT C:\WINDOWS> as you normally expect. Can you please
state what shall I type after c;\MinNT> ... THANKS

You probably booted to the wrong thing. In your case, I'd suggest option
3; you should then be asked for an administrator password, and there just
press enter. Alternately, try pressing 2.

From there you should follow the directions in the KB article. If you need
hands-on help, you should get it.

taking option 3 and yes, it will asked me for the password and hit 'enter'
and will bring me to
D:\windows>
typed 'md tmp'
and when I typed in exactly as in the kb that is

D:\windows> COPY C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM C:\WINDOWS\TMP\SYSTEM.BAK
next message is "Access is denied"

Do I have to change the drive in the kb from "C" TO "D"? ???

This is an HP pc with the dydtem recoveey inside the hard disk. Seems
strange to me as normally the OS should be in C and that the hidden partition
for system recovery be in "D"

Thanks for your guidance.

Yes, I have done it in my DIY pc (where 1: c:\windows) but in this case it
gives 3 options. Form here can you show how quote

"log on to you c: drive and navigate to your windows\system32\config folder
now rename "system" to system.bad "

I hope you dont mind, thanks

Yes. As I recall, the KB article mentions that you need to adjust the
paths as appropriate for your system.

You need to read the directions carefully.

It is. The recovery partition normally has nothing to do with the Windows
install not being on C.

Often those partitions are marked hidden and are not assigned drive letters.
