Windows switching from Classic to XP style on its own

I have a small problem with my Windows XP Pro.

I use the 'Maximize for performance' option (which I assume
is more or less the Windows Classic style), however, whenever
I install anything, remove anything, or make any changes to the
OS (that require a reboot) the system always boots back up in
'XP stlye' .......... I get it changed back to classic style, and it
will boot back up that way everytime, until the next time I do
any of the above.

Not a major problem, just an annoyance to have to go thru the
extra steps to get windows to appear the way I want it everytime
I add or remove or change anything.

Is there a fix for this problem?

If it matters, this is an Asus A8N-SLI motherboard, AMD64 dual core
CPU, 4 gigs of RAM (of which windows only sees 2.75 gig) and 5
internal harddrives. (which is what keeps me from doing a 'repair' install.)

Thank You

Well - I do that too, but I also manually set the style to Windows Classic
(in themes), and also manually set the start menu to classic.

See if manually setting what you want, takes care of it.

That's what I have been doing (I think) ... if you're talking about:
right click on desktop, then 'Properties',
then the "Appearance' tab, and finally, the Windows and Buttons box ......
where I am constantly
having to change it from XP Style to Windows Classic.

Disable the Themes service. Classic will run without it, other themes need
it.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Themes | Click the V next to Startup type |
Select Disabled | Click the Apply button | Click the Stop button |
When the Themes service has stopped, click OK | Close Services

For Windows and buttons...
Visual styles are implemented by the Themes service. If the service isn't
running, Windows reverts to the classic Windows styles, which doesn't rely
on the Themes service.

Windows Classic style allows more choices with...

[[NOTE: You can change the look of individual items if you select Windows
Classic style in the Windows and buttons list on the Appearance tab of
Display Properties. (Right-click an empty area of your desktop, then click
Properties, and then click the Appearance tab). If you select a visual style
other than Windows Classic, that style determines the appearance of your
menus, fonts, icons, and other Window elements. ]]

Thanks, that sounds like it may do it .... I've made the changes, and
will now wait till I install or uninstall something (which I cant go 3 days
without doing) to see if it worked.

Heck, probably disabling that service counts as an 'Operating System'
change .... and it booted right up, the way I left it. Looks like we may
have a winner.

Thanks again and Merry Christmas

Installing Windows Updates sometimes changes Services settings, so it may
happen again. ;-(

Okay Wes ... it's been a few days, I've had to
uninstall/reinstall some things ... and now, it is staying
on Windows classic with every reboot. I think you got
it .....

Thanks very much for the assistance
