Windows Sucks

In 1935, IBM produced the IBM 601 punch card based tabulator capable of
doing 1 multiplication per second. 1500 of them were built. Back in the
1940's there were people who complained that the "new fangled" punch card
tabulating machines had too many annoyances and "bugs". The punch cards were
too fragile- they complained loudly- and would constantly jam the tabulating
machine; thus the phrase "do not fold, spindle or mutilate".

Today we can search for "computer history punch card" and receive 121,000
hits containing who-knows-how-much information in 0.04 seconds. Yet we want
more-- we want to have all this and never a bug or annoyance. The problem is
not with Microsoft or Apple, it is with ourselves. We want more and more and
more and when we get it, we complain about the bugs.

I read once that the three computers which run the space shuttle-- the most
complex piece of engineering yet built-- run completely on 2000 lines of
code. Why then must Windows 98 contain 2 MILLION lines of code? In order to
please us of course. And more and more in order to maximize our pleasure--
our desire for entertainment. Yet we complain that all is not well-- things
are much too complicated and error-prone. But that is our right and our
responsibility. We are, after all, the engine of this revoloution.

So complain away if you must. Your sons and grandsons likely will too. And
together we will propell Microsoft-- and any other entity who dares to enter
this most grand of all races-- to greater heights.

Thanks Jupiter - I appreciate your suggestions and comments. I do
realize this group is not MS, just wanted to get this off my chest
without offending anyone.

Every OS has it's problems, I don't expect 100% perfection 100% of the
time, but the replies I here got seem to really defend XP but judging
the number of posts and (thankfully) monthly patches, I cannot agree -
it's got a long way to go... It's a work in progress and there's
nothing wrong with that!

So if monthly updates are what you think is a major problem, don't do
them. Noone said it was mandatory. My PC only has SP1 on it, it's a 6
year old 1GHz socket A Athlon, with 512 Megs/RAM, and it's been running
great with XP for years now.

IMO, the biggest problem with PC's nowadays is caused by Adware/Spyware.
Period.

Since you said 'all you do' is start XP and use Office, it doesn't sound
like much to backup your data and restore the laptop back to factory
fresh as you got it. Remove all (if any, not familiar with Lenova) of the
lame OEM bundled crap utilities and trialware. Install an A/V program and
some background spyware scanner. Update XP, MANUALLY, choosing only the
updates that really matter.

Stop using OE, and use another e-mail program, like Eudora or similar for
mail and XNews for text newsgroup reading. Don't use IE (which is what
most updates seem to be for), use Firefox instead. Can't tell from your
non-email address posted, but if your on a 24/7 broadband connection,
ABSOLUTELY connect the PC (wired or wireless (but that's another story)
to a NAT router device, like a Netgear or Linksys router, even if it's
only that one PC in use.

Most importantly, you have to have safe browsing habits. You can visit
ANY site on the internet if you have your security set up properly.

Like others have said, this is a public newsgroup where people come to
get help.

I'm not sure if you've even said one specific problem you have, only
ranting on about how XP sucks. I'm 99.9% positive that your PC can be
restored to normal working condition with help from many people here
that, frankly, know their sh*t. (Yes, and some that show their blind
faith in M$ like it was their mother.)

OK, now that I have your attention, I am begging that MS PLEASE FIX all the
annoyances and bugs that plague Windows XP. Each month you propagate
security updates (oh, and yes, the windoze genuine disadvantage bootleg
check) that just add more bugs and instability to the OS. Please o- Please
MS, how about a high priority update that addresses all of the stinking
bugs!

Some high hitting annoyances:

-task bar annoyance - out of the blue task bar will lock up, ALT-Tab works
during this time, after about 1 minute all OK.
-windows goes stupid annoyance - out of the blue, doesn't matter which app -
office or other, you try and open a file, windows gets stupid for a few
seconds while thinking about doing what you want - you know this stupidity
is occurring when you see the tiny application icon in the extreme upper
left corner of the active window change to a dummy DOS box during this
period of confusion.

What crap - talking about Vista? Holy Crap - fix what's out there now -
don't worry about freaking Vista! FIX FREAKING XP!!!!!!

Thanks for reading - I know this will have absolutely no effect on fixing my
windoze troubles, but it sure feels good....

Do you have any specific problem(s) that you need help with, or are
you just venting?

It clearly sounds like an issue of
ncompatible/sub-standard/defective hardware, or device drivers, or
defective/sub-standard wetware. What very little detail you included
points towards defective RAM, or a corrupt swap file (hard drive damage
perhaps?)but you didn't provide any really useful information.

(As an aside, has it occurred to you that, if you're unable to
consistently spell such a common word as "Windows," you might have some
sort of learning disability that hinders your proper installation and
use of the software?)

I didn't mean to come across as sarcastic as it appears I did. My main point
was that in over 2 years of using XP (and all the subsequent updates) I've
never had the problems you're describing.

I'm just trying to open you up to the possibility that (unknown to you) it
isn't Windows and maybe something you downloaded to your system.

If it was Windows (or Windoze as you see fit to call it), we would all have
the same problems. We don't, and just about everyone here I'm guessing is
gettng the same updates.

Whatever it is you have can be fixed, usually. Try ewido.com, spybot.com and
adaware.com if you haven't already. Those 3 can usually repair the majority
of problems in malware.

Hope it helps.

Why don't you focus your plea to the miscreants that find pleasure in
targeting the most popular target of the moment with their egotistic,
selfish, self-satisfying focus of disruption? Do you think it would be any
different if Linux, or Apple was the dominate OS?

There are maybe 10-20 thousand posts a month, including the answers to the
people who post questions. These also include a huge amount of people who
post/repost because they "just don't have a clue", and like one of my
brothers - they don't want to.
This is out of what, 280 million copies of Windows XP sold and in use. A
very tiny part of a single percent of all users. --

Hello Richard
I am afraid your figures/statistics only address a one-sided view of
computer users and their problems.
I wonder how many users there are in that 280 million copies you quote, who
have never heard of newsgroups, forums and discussion groups.
Up until three years ago I had not heard of any of them.
So how did I solve my past problems - I used my local computer shop.
I have some thirty+ relatives and friends with computers - most use the
internet(well 2 don't). Not one of them was aware of such sites to get help
and I am still the only one who uses these facilities(and most thankful for
them too).
Some call me now and some still use their computer man at £40/$60 per hour?
In the past I have used three different local computer fixers who have
charged for their services and I can say that on most occasions I never got
a fix first time.
None of them ever mentioned newsgroups etc - well it wouldn't help their
business?
Whilst I have been using these groups etc, every problem has been resolved.
I would guess the numbers of those with problems who use their local
computer man, far exceed those who come here for a fix.
But still overall, I bet the total percentage is low.

Well with 1.5 MB of RAM I can understand your problem.

Maybe you should up it to 512 Meg.

Yea, it's not Windows, tell that to everyone on the other posts on the NG.

This is actually uplifting - I like Windows, when it works - and I've
never seen such outright support of it...

Thanks for not being as sarcastic as me and as some of the earlier
replies. I know what you are saying, but the hardware is a Thinkpad with
1.5 MB RAM and all of the latest drivers from Lenovo. No problem on the
hardware.

The symptoms you experience are not the experiences of other XP users. Your
XP installation CD may have suffered a hiccup during manufacture or there's
something -- aside from XP -- amiss in your machine.

One woman, when attempting to prove the existence of UFOs, said to Isaac
Asimov: "It's got to be a UFO. What else could it be?" To which Asimov
replied: "Madam, your ignorance is not proof."

So, I suggest, instead of blaming XP, let's find out "what else" it COULD
be.

Next time your system hangs, right-click on the task bar and pick Task
Manager. Actually SEE what is eating the CPU cycles or what is running. You
may have a malware application trying to open a forbidden web site, your
computer may be trying to open a directory on a not-connected network
computer, or any of a dozen other possibilities which, though rare, are
considerably more likely than a mispressed distribution CD.

That last comment goes to show everyone just how unprofessional you are.

Lighten up - life's too short.

How can we help you if you don't even specify what won't work.

In a professional environment if someone is having a problem with their
system I would advise that they keep a log of what is going wrong in what
situation.

On a PC there are so many perms and combs which cannot be controlled for by
Microsoft - of course, in the work environment they try to control for this
by not permitting any unauthorised software etc. I presume that you use
Windows at work like most people - do you have such problems there.

I have System Restore which allows me to revert to a much earlier set-up
when the system was working as it should be. If necessary reinstall.
