Windows startup time

Windows seems to take an age to start up.How can I speed up the time from
turning on PC, to logging in/on and then to being at the desktop picture. I
would be grateful if you could explain things in very very simple English
that a 6 month old could understand as computers are not really my thing. The
whole thing runs really slowly and seems totake longer than friends PC's to
get into programmes. I have run the disk defragmenter but the final report
tells me that it doesnt need defragmenting!!!!

What is your definition of "an age"? Startup time is dependant on many
things, not the least of which is what you have running at startup. Scan
your system for malware, empty the Temporary Internet Files cache and
control what starts with Windows.

I have quite a few programs that start up with XP and my system, a Dell
Dimension 4700, takes about 40 to 60 seconds to bring up the desktop from a
cold start.
