I have an IBM Laptop running WinXP Pro. The IBM has various extraneous keys,
but incredibly does not have a Windows | Start key (usually found between
Alt and Ctrl in most desktop keyboards).

Does anyone know if I could use some WinXP feature to change one of the
IBM's keys (e.g. eliminate one of the extraneous keys) to the Windows |
Start key? Unfortunately, IBM's telephone support sucks, so I would rather
get my answer from the newsgroup than call their help line.

Thanks

Install the Windows Resource Kit and use Remapkey.exe - you can sign the
Windows/Start key to a spare key.

Download Winkey. Do a search for Winley and with that you can assign a Windows key to your keyboard.

Anando,

That is a great suggestion - simple and elegant.

HOWEVER, I need the Start key usually in combination with some other
key (e.g. Start + E) to launch an external program (in this case,
Windows Explorer).

So how does one achieve that, using the CTRL+Esc combo?

Thanks

Well this worked. Ctrl-Alt-Esc starts your start menu. Say you have a
shortcur to Explorer in Programs off the start menu. You can right-click
that shortcut choose Properties and make the Shortcut keys Ctrl-Alt-Down.
So here we go

Ctrl-Alt-Esc
p
right arrow
Ctrl-Alt-Down

That will open Windows Explorer for you.
