Windows Slowdown after Update

I just installed several Security Updates using Windows
update on a Windows 2000, P2 233mhz computer. After
installing the updates and rebooting, the computer ran
really slow. Thinking this was just because of the new
configuration I let it load figuring it would run fine
after that. However, after at least 10min after logging in
with user name and password it was still slow. Using task
manager to see what it was that was slowing it down, come
to find the System taking up 99% of the CPU. I ended up
shutting down and restarting hoping to fix the problem,
nope. So I was wondering what I could do to make it run at
a normal speed and not have the System use up all the CPU's
resources?

This may contribute:
There has been problems with the system shutting down,
whenever online with one specific login (all other logins
seem to work fine). The system shuts down because
windows\system32\lsass.exe is terminated. I suspected the
sasser worm was the cause, but when using the software to
scan for the virus and remove it, the virus was not found.
I also tried the supplied software for other types of
viruses. The computer is currently running the latest
version on McAffee.
