Windows Sliding Down

My nephew, over the holidays, changed a setting somewhere and when I "X"
out of a window it doesn't simply poof, go away, now it slides down.
Just like pulling down a window shade. Where/how can I change it back? I
have Windows XP and would do a system restore, but none of my dates go
back far enough....
Any help would really be appreciated. TIA

There are two places where you can control XP's "eye candy". The first
place (where I think your change was made) is from the Display applet
in Control Panel. Click on the Appearance tab and then on the Effects
button. You'll see where you can use a Fade or Scroll option for menu
transition effects. I usually clear this box entirely. While you're
there, check out the Font Smoothing option. If you have an LCD screen,
see if you like the Clear Type option. Apply and OK out.

Next open the System applet in Control Panel. Click on the Advanced tab
and then click the top button for Performance Settings. You'll see a
lot of effects that you can turn off. I usually only have these things
enabled:

1. Show window contents while dragging
2. Smooth edges of screen fonts
3. Use drop shadows for icons on the desktop
4. Use visual styles on windows and buttons.

You will be surprised at how much more responsive your computer is with
a lot of this eye candy turned off, even on a fast machine.
