Windows Sizing

In XP Pro, (which I have just done a clean re-install), when I resize a
window (eg: Explorer, Control Panel or Outlook etc), and then close
properly with a File ((Shift) Close command, when I go back to it at a
later stage, it has retained its original size and not the size that I
had I set it to.

Anyone got any fixes for this annoying little habit of XP?

Cheers

Ok, try the following option which is by default is not set in a new Windows
installation:
Go to Tools>>Folder Options>>then scroll down till you find a check mark
next to an option called:"Remember each folder's view settings".
Check that option and start working. Let me know if it does not work.

Make sure the resized window is the last window closed.

Marwan,

That option was already checked!
It is also the actual WINDOW size that changes, not a particular folder..

Any other ideas?

Frank,

They always are - I do them one by one, but on the next opening, they go
back to what seems a OS predefined size.

If you are opening with a shortcut, right click the shortcut, select
"properties", choose "maximized" from the run option.
Repeat for all of your shortcuts.

No, he's talking about double clicking "My Computer" or "Control Panel". So
he means the default window size in Windows. I guess there's a registery key
to change that value. I'm looking into that.

No mention of My Computer. Asking about Explorer, Outlook and Control
Panel. This will certainly work with the former two.

Cool thought - But I do NOT want the window maximised - I want a
specific, user defined size......

Exactly right - Clicking a shortcut after I have resized a window still
brings up the Window for that application that is not the size I had
previously set...

Double clicking My Computer is the same problem.........I resize the
window, close it, and when I gp back, it is a different size again!

I have a similar problem on a multi-display xp box. Word comes up maximized
and then only allows minimize and not resize-down as a window control
option. When I select minimize it disappears into the toolbar (looks like it
is going to another display) and I can't resize it - only maximize. I got
around the problem by blowing away the profile but that is not really a
solution. I will try the registry tweak you mentioned and let you know how it
worked.

Try merging the reg edit here:

Line 30, right-hand column.

Logoff & Logon for new setting to be read. Then try to position your folders.

If the window disappears when you restore it from a maximized or minimized state, it's because the
saved coordinates are off-screen. One of the following will usually fix that:

1) With at least one other window open and the misbehaving window off-screen, right-click the
taskbar & select 'Cascade Windows'

2) Restore the app so it is off-screen, then press alt+<spacebar>, then 'm', then use the arrow keys
to bring the window back into view. Try it with a regular window first to get a feel for it.

It's not Maximized then, it just means that the "Restore size" is the
same as the screen although you can still resize it from the corners.
(If it were truly maximized then you couldn't grab the corners or nudge
the position by dragging the title bar.)
