Windows Shutdown Problems

Hi everyone.

First off, sorry if this is in the wrong discussion group, but i'm new to
all of this.

I have this strange problem, and it's related to shutting down windows.

When I try and shut it down, it closes all programs just fine, saves all my
settings just fine, but then it hangs on "shutting down windows" (I use the
Danish version, so sorry if it's not the correct text) - anyways, the last
screen before actually shutting down. And it just hangs there.

I've tried to leave it like that for around an hour, and no luck.

This started around the same time that my SB Live card sort-of burned out
(Dunno what actually happened to it, but it stopped working so i've
temporarily switched to the AC'97 onboard one). I couldn't uninstall the
programs and drivers though, as I got an error message when I tried, so I
manually deleted them and removed all entries in the registry related to
creative or soundblaster - basically anything I could find in there, and then
ran a registry checker to see if I missed something referring to the deleted
files.

Still no luck.

I then surfed the net, and i've tried all I could find on the MS KB

and even tried checking out some of the replies to
other questions (specifically http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php) but still
no luck, so ... that's where I am now ...

I'm at the point where I'd reinstall windows, if I could just find my CD,
but having moved twice since I installed XP, I've somehow lost my install cd,
so that's not an option. So I really hope anyone can guide me to check some
stuff I've probably missed, or tell me where i've screwed up or ... well ...
anything really :)

Thx in advance!

Hiya Gerry.

Tried to install the program, but didn't solve anything, unfortunately :(

It still hanged in the very last logoff screen (the one after "saving
settings")

so, not a problem with the profile or the registry I guess? :/

Right ... well, when I found out it wasn't a problem with the profile nor the
registry as such, my mind kicked into action again, and I messed around a bit
with the "msconfig" utility, and lo and behold, my computer now shuts down.

However, I found loads of services and start-up programs that I want to
remove permanently, as they're just not supposed to be there (this includes
the service I think was responsible for stalling my computer - a left-over
creative cd-drive service), so could anyone tell me how I should go about
removing these permanently? Do I need to use regedit? or is there some easier
way?

running in this "selective startup" mode is really really slow to boot up
you see :)

/Martin
