windows service pack 2

When i install windows sp2 on my computer it becomes unstable, so i have not
installed it thrn i keep getting a popup telling me that support for sp1 ends
october 10 2006.
can anyone help me with any possable solutions as to why it becomes unstable
i have enougth ram hard drive space etc. i have no progrmas that is conflicts
with my processer is athlon 64
