Hello ether, I am really struggling with this hence my first cry for help.
Whenever i am trying to send and receive on windows mail a pop-up window from
windows security is asking for my server username and password. Each time i
enter this it pops up again as if having not recognised it. So now i can
only access my e-mail from the btinternet.com site. My password and username
used to work but i think windows updates have caused a problem. Vista sp1
hasn't helped and there are no more updates available. Suggestions welcome.

Some email servers require you to enter your username with no spaces and no
CAPITAL LETTERS. Some require that you follow it with the part of your
email address starting with @, and some require that you don't. Many
require
that you be careful about which letters of your password are CAPITAL
LETTERS,
and which are lowercase. Many give rather vague error messages if they find
anything at all wrong with your username and/or password, to avoid helping
anyone trying to guess them without your permission.

Also, if you're using more than one server, make sure that you're entering
the
username and password for the right one.

Check if you have set Caps Lock without noticing it.

I have exactly the same problem - for no apparent reason a pop-up with
Windows Security writ large asks me to verify my user name and password. when
I do (they haven't changed in 6 months) it wont let me access my email
server. As we live in a remote part of the world and this is our only form of
communication this is really serious

There is a strong possibility that your antivirus has corrupted that mail
account. As a first step, try this: delete that mail account, restart
Windows Mail, then recreate the account. Does it work now?

Which antivirus are you running?

We recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a custom install
where you tell it to leave out the parts that scan email.

Norton, McAfee, and Trend are bad choices, since they are the
three antivirus programs most likely to cause problems in
Windows Mail.

Having more than one antivirus program installed at a time is not
a good idea.

However, you can have more than antispyware program installed
at a time without problems. I have three:

I don't know which is best, but the two free ones that are compatible
with Windows Mail are:

AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning module so it won't install.

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of aggressive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in McAfee.

So I do have live mail and windows mail with the same problem to both. I uninstalled mcafee and used your removal tool. At this time I tried my email while I was unprotected and it did not help my situation, so I reinstalled mcafee again. If it was mcafee causing the problem would it have worked when it was totally uninstalled. I had even reinstalled live with a new account at that time still no luck.

Sometimes after uninstalling McAfee and using its removal tool, you
also need to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

Also check if you have any of the following programs on your
list of installed programs: Google Toolbar, Google Desktop, and
SMS Desktop. If you do, uninstall them.

If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause such problems. Norton and Trend
are bad choices; they are the other two of the three antivirus
programs that cause the most problems in Windows Mail.
I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a custom

If the above doesn't solve your problem, you may have a problem
the way you are entering your username and password. Some
email servers require you to enter your username with no spaces
and no CAPITAL LETTERS. Some require you to follow it with
the part of your email address that starts with @, and some require
that you don't. Many require you to be careful about which letters
of your password are CAPITAL LETTERS and which are
lowercase. Many give rather vague error messages if they find
anything at all wrong with your username and/or password, in
order to avoid helping anyone trying to guess your username and
password without your permission.

If uninstalling McAfee, and using their cleanup tool, did not cure the
problem, then something else is causing it.

Are you able to get a more comprehensive error message if you
click on Cancel after trying the password a few times? If so,
please post a copy of that error message.

Are you certain you are using the correct username and password?
Do the same username and password work when you access that
email account with webmail (using your browser)?

Other than that, I am fresh out of ideas.

Okay now I feel really silly, when I set up my account in my mail I put in a password and user name that is different than what was in my webmail user and password..now everything works..

Well, I'm glad I jogged your memory when I mentioned trying the
webmail login credentials.

I was struggling with this as well. After going through all the suggestions
deleting and re-entering accts, 3hrs on with my ISP techies, 3hrs with
Compaq techs in Bombay, on and on.... The thing that finally worked for me
was entering my full email address and my ISP password. I hope it works for
you as well.

Your ISP should have a web page that illustrates how to set up an
email account. Among other things, it will show whether just the
username or the complete email address is required as a login
name for the mail server.
