Hello. I have Windows XP SP2 on an Acer laptop. When I click on
Start>Search>For Files or Folders, it comes up to the Windows Explorer
window, but the left side vertical bar (the one that used to ask what
type of file I wanted to search for) is blank. The right side window
is also blank. So, it is just the top toolbars and 2 blank windows
below that.

This has been not working for months. I haven't installed anything
new, but it could have been caused by my running a registry cleaner.

Any ideas on how to restore Search?

I appreciate your help!

Login as Administrator (or equivalent). Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

If that does not help, try reinstalling Search:

1. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
2. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
3. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install.

This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses. When you're prompted for the system files, insert your Windows XP CD, or point to Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder (if you've applied SP1 or SP2 separately) where the system files are located.
