Hi

I have Windows 2000 Sp4 and McAfee Firewall installed for months and all work fine until I, two day ago, installed Zone Alarm 4 pro
The installation of Zone Alarm 4 pro was fine and all was work good
The two firewalls was working together without problems, but after the reboot of the computer, windows never start again and reboot automatically continuously every time at the end of the procedure of load the SO!!!
So I was thinking that the problem was that the two firewalls try to share the same ms dll at reboot time and this cause the reboot of the SO. To solve this I was thinking to enter the system in the safe mode and delete or rename the directory of Zone Alarm to avoid the automatically load of Zone Alarm
I tried F8, but any option list there (safe mode, safe mode with network etc.) was not able to solve the problem.
The computer continues to reboot automatically every time at the end of the procedure of load the SO
Then I tried to load the SO by Windows 2000 cd and go in the repair options and chose console, but when I try to access the Program Files directory (where Zone Alarm is installed) I get “Access denied!†but I’m log on as administrator!!!!
In conclusion
1. Is there a way to load Windows 2000 not from the HD and have full grant on the system (been able to access directory, rename, delete, copy, read)?
2. Rename or delete the Zone Alarm directory will solve my problem

Thank for the help me

There are two easy ways to access your hard disk outside Win2000: With a
Win98 boot disk (www.bootdisk.com) for FAT32 partitions, and via the Command
Console for NTFS partitions.

Command Console: Boot with your Win2000 CD, select "Repair", then "Command
Console". Once in the Command Console, you can do this:
- Disable any services
- Rename any files in c:\winnt.
- Note that ZA uses some files in c:\winnt\system32\vs*.*.
Don't delete them - just rename them.
- Delete any ZA shortcuts in the Startup subfolder of
your profile folders.
The Command Console will probably not allow you
to rename the ZA folder but you might now be able
to start Win2000 in Safe Mode and uninstall ZA.

If this does not solve your problem then you can
use a sledge hammer: The Bart WinXP Boot CD.
Here are the requirements to make one:
- The Bart loader program (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/#download)
- A Win2000/XP PC with a CD burner.
- A WinXP Professional CD

Booting your PC with this CD gives you a
basic installation of WinXP, all on the CD.
Your hard disk is not affected in any way
but it is now fully accessible.

Hi Pegasus

II tried with win98 boot disk but this doesn’t work because my C drive is a NTFS partition
I tried with Command Console but
1. How I can disable any service with the Command Console? Net stop doesn’t work in Command Console
2. I cannot delete any Za shortcuts in the Start-up subfolder of my profile folder because in Win 2000 these folders are outside the c:\winnt folder and any folder outside of this folder the console not allow to access
3. I will try to rename some files in c:\winnt\system32\vs*.* and see if I can start win2000 in safe mode and uninstall ZA

Anyway I went in url: http://www.ntfs.com/boot-disk.htm and there I download “DOS NTFS boot disk to access NTFS partitions in Windows XP 2000 or NTâ€
Tonight I will try this and I will inform you if I succeed to have a full access on my C drive and to solve my problem

Thanks
Marc

If you have a spare aditional machine you can place the
harddisk mentioned as second harddisk in the working
system. For example connected to the secondary IDE
controler. (e.g. instead of the CD-ROM)
Run windows 2000 (NTFS installed) and you can access the
harddisk in the 2nd IDE controler. Visable as the first
free drive letter.

Good luck.

Some answers to your questions:

- To enable/disable services while in the Command Console: I don't remember
but I think that the commands "Enable" and "Disable" control services. The
command "Help" tells you more.

- To access your NTFS partition with the NTFS boot disk from your link:
Sorry, I don't think this will work - it's a read-only tool.

- How to access your NTFS partition: Install your disk as a slave disk in
some other Win2000 PC.

Hi Ben
Thanks for your answer.
I’m afraid that this will be the only solution, but the problem is that I don't have another Win2000 pc
Anyway, how is it possible that there isn't a tool to access a NTFS partition and have a full access to the file system not only read-only
How it is possible that Microsoft doesn't have such tool
How it is possible that ZA make so much damage
Why the console does not permit to access to the administrator any directory than c:/winnt
Yes, I made a mistake to install two firewalls but I think that this kind of thing should not be happen in SO like win2000 pro

They do - install a minimum version of Win2000 on the same disk.
How it is possible that ZA make so much damage?
Ask ZoneLabs. I no longer use the product.
Why the console does not permit to access to the administrator any
directory than c:/winnt?

It does - but you must set it for full access to all folders while Win2000
is still up and running.
