I have a friends Computer that completly locked up on him (Hard drive has
failed) - it was a third hand one and had XP pro installed on it - he never
had a CD with the OS and has no code stuck on the computer - i have a win XP
CD but i dont want to use my code as it is alreadr registerd on my pc - i
dont really want to buy a code for a computer that had one - anyone know how
i can get hold of one?

Microsoft are so useless i cant even speak to someone!

Why is it that a lack of disks, codes and no OEM sticker makes MS
useless. Obtaining a Product Key depends on information you didn't
post ( type of XP Professional - Retail, OEM or VLK ) what brand
of PC. No computer should over it's life should experience three failed
disk drives

Support has changed. Companies cannot ( or shouldn't ) have to
contend with customers who loose important data or don't take the
steps necessary to protect their investment. You don't call GM when
you misplace your car keys.

I'm sorry that I can't give you helpful advice but as I do this for my
living I'm getting less and less sympathetic to users who loose the disk,
keys and don't make proper backups.

In your case you get a product key by buying one.
Blaming the situation on Microsoft is a result of your lack of knowledge on
the subject, how is Microsoft going to know what the key was?
What should have been done was an inventory of the system should have been
taken BEFORE it crashed, would have been a simple task to acquire the key.

Your friend will need to purchase a "Full Version" of
Windows XP if he wants Windows XP installed.

Why doesn't your friend just restore his backup to a new hard disc?

No idea how old the computer is here, but it just might be time to buy a
new one.

And Microsoft really aren't so useless...

Actually, there is a solution for this problem.
Check out Key Finder by Jelly Bean software:
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

Run that on the friend's computer, get the CD key using that software,
re-install XP with your CD, and put in the code you got using Key Finder.
