Ok. This is weird and I think it happened after one of my teenagers used my
laptop. (yeah, yeah...I know) As of recently, I can't open ANY pictures
using WP & FV. Even if it's a thumbnail, all it does it lock up and send in
an error report and go to a website which does no good. I can open any other
file...Word, Excel, Pdf files, etc. It will even let me open pictures in
Paint but that's not what I want. Does anyone have any ideas on what this
is??? Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!

p.s...I even tried doing a system restore to an earlier date and it didn't
faze it at all.

To fix the Windows Picture and Fax viewer, you may type this command in
Start/Run dialog:

regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

See if this one solve the problem and please let us know.

Thanks for the replies! I had tried pasting that from reading some other
postings but it didn't do any good. I even rebooted just to make sure.
(nothing was said about rebooting). So if I don't used MP & FV, what should
I use instead?

Thanks again!

Kip

Well, I did the shortcut on the desktop and opened the viewer. Got the
message like it said. When I drag a photo into it, it goes into it's usual
freeze up mode and creates the error..."Run a DLL as an Ap". The rest of it
reads...."Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience". If I send the error report, it takes me
to this link...which makes no sense to me.
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=da7ac75d-319f-458e-8d4f-748e6ca11984&SID=1163

I hate this. lol

Thanks for all the information, Wes. Even after all of that, it still
freezes when trying to view something in WP & FV. It will open fine in
paint, though. But here's an example. Let's say I have "My Documents"
folder open and something happens to have a thumbnail on it....even on that,
it will freeze up and colse out the My Documents folder after it sends the
usual error report. I just dont get it.

Also, tried your last recommendation from the post about the "Image Editor"
zip file. When I double click the file on desktop, it asks me to "choose the
image editor application". When I hit "browse", it defaults to lookint in
the Program Files. What do I choose here? What is it looking for me to
choose?

Again...thanks for all your help.

Kip,

It sounds as though your .zip file association may also be messed up.

If you have WinZip or some other 3rd party zip utility do *NOT* do the
following, unless you want to restore the native XP zip utility.

Windows® XP File Association Fixes
Copyright 2003 - Doug Knox
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Read the instructions. Then get...

ZIP Folder Association Fix (Restores default associations for ZIP Folders -
REG File)

zipfolder_fix.reg restores the native XP zip utility.

zipfldr.dll is what XP uses for .zip files.
----

Sounds like shimgvw.dll (Windows Picture and Fax Viewer) may be messed up.

System File Checker (sfc.exe) replaces screwed up system files.

Load your XP CD in your CD drive.

Start | Run | Type or paste: sfc /scannow | Click OK

If you have XP Home and it asks for your XP Pro CD, see this KB article...

You may be prompted to insert a Windows XP Professional CD when you run the
System File Checker tool in Windows XP Home Edition

I went thru that the other day as well but this time went in and verified the
folders being present in the Registry...which they are. These 2...

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{66e4e4fb-f385-4dd0-8d74-a2efd1bc6178} is there.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{E84FDA7C-1D6A-45F6-B725-CB260C236066} is there.

The one that I didnt see was the rundll32.exe in the "C:\Windows\System32
folder". Should it be?

What about a virus affecting this since I can't seem to run my AdAware SE
Personal program. Would something be blocking it? It's just I can't view
any picture that is in the form of a jpeg, gif, etc...even if it's within an
email and you double click it to view it. The only way I can view something
like that is to save it to desktop and open it with Paint.

Weird. Thanks for your input!

Kip

Run a DLL as an App, rundll32.exe should be in C:\Windows\System32

If rundll32.exe is missing you'd have big problems.

A backup copy of rundll32.exe should be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

If you ran the System File Checker, and rundll32.exe was missing from
C:\Windows\System32, SFC should have replaced it.

If SFC.EXE did anything it will be in the Event Viewer.

Open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK |
Click System | Look at any Windows File Protection
entries

Try a simple test for rundll32.

Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...

RUNDLL32 SHELL32.DLL,Control_RunDLL TIMEDATE.CPL,@0,1

This should open the Date/time applet at the Time Zone tab.

Open the Event Viewer...

Click System | Look at any Windows File Protection

A virus or any type of malware is *always* a possibility. If you ever
suspect that...

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

And consider running your AV in Safe Mode.

Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves in areas Windows
protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those applications
access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware.

RegSvr32

What the heck does that mean? I'm beginning to hate this thing more and more!

I went back and downloaded this again. Does it require a reboot to take
effect? Also, everything in the HKEY_Classes area that you list below is in
there and correct. SO in theory, it should open up a picture in WP&FV, right?

Frustrated....Kip

I am having the same issue, it started yesterday for me. (or atleast
that is when I noticed it) "LoadLibrary("shimgvw.dll") failed - error
performing inpage operation" when I try the regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
command or when I try to open any image in the quick viewer.

Normally I wouldn't mind this as I have Irfanview and I don't use
previews in explorer but I can't even right click on an image file
without it takeing forever and a day because that is missing. Not only
that, ad-aware and antivirus scanners use it when they scan picture
files, without it functioning they cannot scan your system as they
freeze on the first image.
